Mapping the structure and function of the cortico-basal ganglia network in marmosets by use of pathway-specific labeling and manipulation technology
Kazuto Kobayashi
A comprehensive understanding of circuit function and synaptic organization in the basal ganglia will provide a framework that can be used to develop novel treatments for neurological and psychological disorders. To address this issue, we aim to develop a detailed functional and anatomical map of the basal ganglia circuit in marmosets. By using viral vectors for highly efficient neuron-specific retrograde gene transfer, Kobayashi’s group will manipulate the function of the corticostriatal and thalamostriatal circuits and elucidate their roles in motor control and cognitive functions. By using neuroanatomical technology at light and electron microscopic levels, including pathway tracing and cell type identification, Yamasaki’s group will localize glutamate and dopamine receptors in the basal ganglia circuit, and investigate the relationship between particular projections and receptor localization.
